Arrows point readers to a link, show steps in a process, mark replies and add direction to notes and diagrams. Unicode includes hundreds of them, from the simple → used in maths and logic to bold dingbat arrows like ➜ and ➤ that work well as bullet points. Frequently asked questions

How do I type an arrow on Windows?

Hold Alt and type a number on the numeric keypad: Alt+24 gives ↑, Alt+25 ↓, Alt+26 →, Alt+27 ←, Alt+29 ↔ and Alt+18 ↕. In Microsoft Word, typing --> is automatically corrected to → by default.

How do I type an arrow on a Mac or phone?

On a Mac, press Control+Command+Space to open the Character Viewer and choose the Arrows category. Phone keyboards rarely include arrows, so copying one from this page is the fastest option.

What is the difference between → and ➜?

→ (Rightwards Arrow) is the standard arrow used in maths, logic and typography. ➜ (Heavy Round-Tipped Rightwards Arrow) is a decorative dingbat that stands out more as a bullet or pointer. Both are plain text.
