Frequently asked questions
How do I type ©, ® and ™?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0169 for ©, 0174 for ® or 0153 for ™ on the numeric keypad. On a Mac, press Option+G for ©, Option+R for ® and Option+2 for ™. Microsoft Word also turns (c), (r) and (tm) into the symbols automatically.
What is the difference between ™ and ®?
™ can be used with any brand name or logo you claim as a trademark, registered or not. ® signals a registered trademark, and in many countries it is illegal to use it for a mark that has not been registered. ℠ is the equivalent of ™ for services.
Do I need the © symbol to protect my work?
In most countries, no. Under the Berne Convention, copyright applies automatically when a work is created. Adding a notice like © 2026 Your Name is still useful because it tells people who owns the work and when it was published.
What does ℗ mean?
℗ is the sound recording copyright symbol. It appears on albums and streaming releases to show who owns the rights to the recording itself, while © covers the underlying composition and artwork.
