How do I type math symbols on a Mac?

Many have Option shortcuts on a US keyboard: Option+= gives ≠, Option+, gives ≤, Option+. gives ≥, Option+X gives ≈, Option+5 gives ∞, Option+P gives π, Option+V gives √, Option+/ gives ÷, Option+W gives ∑ and Option+Shift+= gives ±.

How do I type math symbols on Windows?

Hold Alt and type the code on the numeric keypad: Alt+0177 for ±, Alt+0215 for ×, Alt+0247 for ÷, Alt+0176 for °, Alt+0178 for ² and Alt+0189 for ½. In Microsoft Word, Insert > Equation offers a full maths keyboard.

Is − the same as a hyphen?

No. The true minus sign − (U+2212) is the same width as + and sits at the correct height for maths, while the hyphen on your keyboard is shorter. Use − when you want equations to look properly typeset.

Why are ∆ and Δ listed separately?

They are different characters: ∆ (Increment) is the mathematical symbol for change, while Δ is the Greek capital letter delta. They usually look almost identical.
