Frequently asked questions

How do I type card suit symbols?

On Windows, hold Alt and type a number on the numeric keypad: Alt+3 gives ♥, Alt+4 ♦, Alt+5 ♣ and Alt+6 ♠. On a Mac, open the Character Viewer with Control+Command+Space and search for the suit name.

Can I write chess moves with these symbols?

Yes. Figurine algebraic notation replaces the piece letter with a symbol, for example ♘f3 instead of Nf3 or ♕xd7 instead of Qxd7. It is used in many chess books because it reads the same in any language.

Why does ♟ sometimes look like an emoji?

♟ (Black Chess Pawn) also has an emoji version, so some apps draw it as a coloured pawn. The other chess pieces do not have emoji forms and always appear as text.
