Frequently asked questions

How do I type a check mark ✓?

In Microsoft Word, type 2713 and press Alt+X for ✓ (or 2714 for the heavy ✔). In Google Docs, use Insert > Special characters and search for "check". On a Mac, open the Character Viewer with Control+Command+Space. Or simply copy one from this page.

What is the difference between ✓ and ✅?

✓ is a text symbol that takes your font and text colour, so it fits neatly in documents and spreadsheets. ✅ is an emoji drawn as a green box with a white tick, which suits chats and social posts better.

Is √ the same as a check mark?

No. √ is the mathematical square root sign. It looks similar and is sometimes used as a tick, but ✓ is the correct character for checklists and is read properly by screen readers.

Can I use these symbols in Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Paste ✓ or ✗ into a cell like any other text, and you can then count them with a formula such as COUNTIF(A1:A20,"✓").
